The Iowa Driftless Fly Tying Club is an informal group within the Iowa Driftless Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Not all TU members are fly fishermen, and of those who are, many do not tie their own flies. But those who do usually enjoy sharing their tying skills. To help develop tying skills, and share patterns and techniques, the Chapter tries to have a member demonstrate how to tie a favorite fly at each regular meeting. But we will occasionally meet separately to focus solely on the art of fly tying. Our first such gathering was held Saturday, January l7, 2008, at Chris Wasta’s shop at 1468 Old Stage Road (4 miles east of Walmart in Decorah). Click on the thumbnail images below to see highlights of that morning's activity. Those attending included: Chris Wasta, Jeffery Skeate, Marv Slind, Steve Jacobson, Sam Fox, Wayne Wasta, Mark Weber, Craig Cutting, and the two dogs "Wag" and "Burt".
Tyers will meet on Saturday, February 4 at Chris Wasta's shop at 1468 Old Stage Road (4 miles east of Walmart in Decorah). from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Beginner, intermediate and advanced tyers welcome! Please come! (In the event of bad weather on January 7, the following weekend, February 11, will be our back-up.)
Check the chapter website for future tying events, or if you have questions or suggestions, contact Chris Wasta: (563) 382-6245, Jeffery Skeate or Marv Slind. Beginners, intermediate and advanced tiers are always welcome!
There are many websites where you can learn the basic skills of fly tying. One that's not as well known in Driftless area, but which offers some great perspectives and insights, is KWSU Public Television, from Pullman, Washington. They have been producing a program called "Fly Tying, the Angler's Art" for many years; you can watch some of the episodes on their website: http://kwsu.org/Offers/FlyTying.aspx.
